It's About Time

Most forms of discrimination in the United States are prohibited; you can't make jokes about people based on their sex, you can't make jokes about people because they are black, you can't make fun of people because they are handicapped. The world is almost no fun anymore.

But you can still mock people because they are old, fat, ugly, stupid, have bad taste, are crazy, or can't get any, and now here is proof that the Chinese are ready to become the world leaders of the 21st century; they now OFFICIALLY discriminate against these people. (at least 5 of the 7 categories.)

Yes! You cannot go to China and adopt a baby if you are old, fat, ugly, are depressed, or single. I think this is a step in the right direction, and all that needs to happen next is that people should have to score at least a 2200 on the SAT and have a really tastefully furnished house to adopt a child. If they own a Thomas Kinkaid painting, they should be shot.

This entry is ridiculous:

"Most forms of discrimination in the United States are prohibited; you can't make jokes about people based on......"

First of all, I wouldn't call making jokes "discrimination." That word tends to refer to unequal treatment in housing, pay, that type of thing. Secondly, it's not prohibited to make any of these jokes (and people make jokes about race, sex, etc. all the time); it's just tasteless. And insensitive.

"But you can still mock people because they are old, fat, ugly, stupid, have bad taste, are crazy, or can't get any...."

Again, you could mock any of the types you mention. However, age discrimination is illegal. And it's still in bad taste to mock the obese, ugly, mentally ill and unlucky. As for "bad taste," that's more classism.

"the Chinese are ready to become the world leaders of the 21st century; they now OFFICIALLY discriminate against these people. You cannot go to China and adopt a baby if you are old, fat, ugly, are depressed, or single...."

Firstly, you can't adopt a baby if you're ugly? Huh? Who determines this? That doesn't make sense.
Secondly, you're being disingenuous. This isn't Discrimination (which always has the air of Prejudice), it's just good policy. If you're old or fat, health issues may limit your ability to raise a child. If you're depressed, you probably shouldn't be raising children. If you're single (and not wealthy), you may not have the resources to raise a child. As for ugly--I don't see why you would consider it relevant.

"...have a really tastefully furnished house to adopt a child."

Wouldn't that knock you out of the running right away? Or is "stuffed with clutter" the design aesthetic of the new millennium?
